This rare blue pearl will convert you if you don't already love pearls. It's an icy blue with violet overtones, subtly gorgeous with a fine lustre. The pearl hangs singularly on our signature swivel bail, which invites you to move the pearl between your fingers. We call this style the perfume bottle pendant, for its resemblance to a Victorian perfume bottle.
- Solid 14K recycled yellow gold
- 18" delicate box chain
- Blue Japanese Akoya Pearl
Japanese Akoya pearls are a happy accidental consequence of pearl-culturing. The blue pearl occurs when the host-mollusk lays a blue-black-gray layer down under layers of white, due to an inflammatory response. The result is a beautiful, silky blue.
Pearl culturing is a sustainable enterprise, as defunct pearl farms can easily be converted to rice paddies without much infrastructure change.
Akoya pearls take approximately 10-18 months to cultivate, which is double that of most cultured pearls.
Because they are cultured in colder water, the crystal structure of an Akoya is very compact, making the surface fine with high lustre.
