About Opal

  • Opal is a microcrystalline form of silica that can be found all over the world. Microcrystalline simply means that the crystal structure is so dense and minute that it can't be seen with the naked eye. Chalcedony and Agate are also forms of microcrystalline silica.
  • Light refracting through the latticework of silica molecules is what causes the "play of color" so often associated with Opal, yet Opal can be found in delicate blue, pink, yellow and white opaque varieties, as well as the rainbow-colored crystal, white and black opal we are more familiar with.
  • Ethiopian Opal is what is called "hydrophane," meaning it is thirsty for water. Care for your opals by removing them before showering, or swimming. Water absorption may cause yellowing and will obscure the delicate coloring of these beauties.
