About Tanzanite

  • Tanzanite is December's birthstone and is at least 1000x rarer than a diamond.
  • Tanzanite is Zoisite that gets its rich color through gentle heating inside the earth. Often light or uncolored Tanzanite is lightly heated to bring out its best coloration, this is a fairly common treatment for this gem.
  • Heated Tanzanite is dichroic - meaning it displays 2 colors depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The two colors are red-violet and violet to blue
  • Unheated Tanzanite is trichroic! The third color is a yellow-green which is considered undesirable and usually removed from the gem by heating.
  • This blue-violet variety of Zoisite comes from only one 5-mile area in the world, the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. In the past 2 years, the government of Tanzania has reformed the rules and regulations surrounding the trade of Tanzanite to create a fair-trade market for this precious gem, and we're pretty happy about it!
