Coober Pedy Opal comes from the famous underground mining town in Australia of the same name. "Coober Pedy" is an anglicized interpretation of the Aboriginal "kupa piti" meaning "boys' waterhole." Fun fact: About half of the town's residents live underground due to the extreme heat - which can easily reach over 125 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. (sweating emoji)
The beauty and value of opal is measured by its brightness, its body tone, its pattern and it's "play of color."
Opal is associated with magic across many cultures. It is said to contain galaxies and fireworks. Ancient Greeks believed that Opals gave the gift of prophecy and protected their owners from disease.
Opal is the birthstone of October (also tourmaline!) and was rumored to be bad luck for anyone not born in this month. Myth busted! This rumor was started by a 19th century novelist, and we think it brings a touch of magic to whoever chooses to wear one.
Australian Opal is considered to be ethical and environmentally responsible in its sourcing by default - because it can be found on the surface or in shallow pits, mining is not dangerous or environmentally destructive.
